Destination - Praia Do Tofo
"Unfortunately there are a few locals that still need to be educated on the preservation of the natural resources. Do not buy shells or shark jaws"
Tofo is situated in the province of Inhambane and is 22km from the City of Inhambane. About 17 km east of Inhambane is where Bar Babalaza marks the crossroads to Tofo and Barra.
Tofo is a small beach town with a hotel and other beach front accommodation. It has a lovely open beach, nice reefs for fishing and snorkeling, beach bars and dive schools, where you can slow down your pace of life, do nothing, relax and just leave your footprints. Tofo has been popular with Zimbabweans and South Africans since before the war and Tofo has now also become a firm favourite on the international backpacking trail and offers a variety of accommodation and places to eat and drink.
The market place in Tofo is very popular with locals and tourists. Most of the day to day consumables are bought in the market which is the hub of the town.
Tofino, less than a kilometre south is situated on a more exposed and rocky headland. The beach at Tofino is known for very good surfing and the headland is also a favourite spot for fishermen when a high tide covers the shelf, allowing casting for Kingfish into the deep waters beyond.
Tourism Hotspot
In the last 10 years tourism has exploded in Tofo and now there are many accommodation places, backpackers, a hotel and a few good restaurants. There is still a touch of the old in Tofo with the locals rowing out in their little wooden fishing boats earl mornings on the far right of the beach.

Many locals live and work in Tofo in the Marketplace carving and making artifacts for the tourist trade.
Unfortunately there are a few unsavoury characters that still need to be educated on the preservation of the natural resources. Do not buy shells or shark jaws please as the locals need to learn that destroying the marine environment is not the way forward for Mozambique.

Location
Praia do Tofo is situated about 7 hours drive from Maputo to the north east and 30 minutes past the town of Inhambane. The road from Maputo to Inhambane is tarred and in a fairly good condition and finally soon the long section past Xai Xai will be fixed and in fine form. The road from Inhambane to Praia do Tofo is acceptable but deteriorating but good for Mozambique standards. You can reach Tofo with a regular small car but a van or 4x4 is always preferred to cope with the odd Potholes.
