Shark Explorers Cape Town
Shark Diving in Cape Town - About Shark Explorers
Morne Hardenberg is inexplicably drawn to sharks. His passion for these fascinating predators started more than 15 years ago with his first shark encounter while snorkelling for crayfish in Cape waters. Since then he has spent the last 10 years focusing on great white sharks through underwater filming, free-diving and shark tourism. He even met his beautiful wife, a shark researcher through their shared love of sharks. His passion for sharks continues to grow through each and every underwater experience and through Shark Explorers he wants to share these experiences with you.
Unfortunately he has seen first hand how ignorance, greed and a lack of awareness has resulted in the decline of many of our local shark populations. One of the main reasons Morne started Shark Explorers is that he firmly believes that each one of us can make a difference. He believes that he can make a difference by showing people a positive experience with sharks. He has strong feelings about the way sharks are misrepresented as potential killers for an adrenalin experience to sell tours. Sharks should be respected as the critically important predators they are and that is predators or their normal environment and not people.
Shark Explorers sets the standards and guidelines for responsible shark diving and interactions high. They provide a holistic experience which includes breaking down sensationalist, adrenaline-hyped advertising, treating sharks with respect, reducing the impact we have on them and their environment, educating divers about their behaviour and the threats they face. Most importantly he wants to show you the sheer beauty of these fascinating sharks and give you an experience you won’t forget.
Morne is an acclaimed diver, shark conservationist and underwater cameraman. He is a qualified PADI Divemaster, a Department of Manpower trained commercial diving supervisor, a SAMSA qualified boat skipper and is trained in medic first aid (Level III). Morne has 10 years experience working in a family owned great white shark tourism business where he learnt how to provide to the needs of tourists and filmmakers alike. He is a talented free diver and has hundreds of dives free-diving with great white sharks outside of cages, alongside his uncle, Mike Rutzen. Underwater filming is a special passion and documentaries he has worked on include:CNN's Planet in Peril: Battle Lines, Beyond Fear (National Geographic), SHARKMAN (Discovery), Great White Shark: a Living Legend (BBC Natural World), Deep Water (Animal Planet). In each, his passion and unique relationship with sharks shines through. A highlight in his career is winning the 2008 Award of Excellence from the Guild of Television Cameraman for his breathtaking great white shark sequences in the film “SHARKMAN”. Still photography is a new hobby, but already his photographs have appeared on the front pages of leading newspapers. Morne believes it’s his unusual insight into shark behaviour that gives him an edge.

Shark Explorers 7 Gill Cow Shark Diving
The Experience
Join Shark Explorers on a unique dive with sevengill cowsharks. This is one of the only places in the world that you can consistently dive with these rarely seen sharks. Sevengill cowsharks are formidable predators of seals, other sharks and fish. They are called “wolves of the sea” because of their cooperative hunting behaviour which is extraordinary behaviour amongst sharks. What adds to the unique experience is that because of their natural curiosity and confidence we don’t use any form of chum or bait to interact with them.

Tips for safely diving with Sevengill cowsharks
These sharks do not like to be touched in any way whatsoever, whether it’s intentional or accidental. The best way to safely dive with these sharks is to always be aware of your position in the water and where you are kicking. Being in complete control of your buoyancy will help you achieve this. Make sure that you keep eye contact with any sharks that are approaching you. Make sure that you do not corner the shark or make it feel boxed in where it may react by biting because it feels threatened.
Filming and photography
Great close-up opportunities exist for filming and still photography of the sevengill cowsharks, smaller catsharks, endemic fish and the kelp forest provides the ideal setting.
Habitat
The sharks are found in between the kelp forests of the Cape in a Marine Protected Area (MPA). This means the ecosystem is healthy and has an abundance and diversity of a variety of fish, shellfish and soft corals.
Shark behaviour and diver interaction
The sevengill cowsharks are very curious and confident sharks. They swim slowly through the kelp or over the sandy channels between the kelp. They are social sharks and are often found in groups of 10 – 20. The size range seen by divers is between 1 – 3 meters. They will readily approach divers to get a closer look which means they swim right up to you and only turn at the very last minute. Close encounters are common.

Tips for safely diving with Blue and Mako sharks
For Advanced qualified divers only!
These sharks do not like to be touched in any way whether it’s intentional or accidental and are usually frightened away when touched. The best way to safely dive with these sharks is to always be aware of your position in the water and where you are kicking. Being in complete control of your buoyancy will help you achieve this. Make sure that you keep eye contact with sharks that are approaching you. Make sure that you do not put yourself in a position where the shark feels threatened or cornered. Blue and mako sharks are attracted to shiny and bright objects and colours and it’s ideal to have one colour (preferably dark colour) wetsuit, fins and gloves. Diving in the open ocean has its own risks and although we are experienced it’s also important to make sure you stay in contact with the boat at all times.
Filming and photography
Due to the clear, warm water and beautiful colours of the sharks there are fantastic filming and photographic opportunities.
Habitat
These sharks inhabit deep oceanic waters and can only be found 20 - 30 miles out to sea with no land in sight. Over warm waters that are hundreds of meters deep you just never know what to expect out there like seeing pilot or sperm whales or even turtles and whale sharks.
Shark behaviour and diver interaction
Blue sharks are curious sharks that don’t mind investigating divers, but they can be a little skittish and usually are most interested in the bits of chum on offer. Typically smaller blue sharks about 1.5 – 2 meters are around the boats with up to 30 sharks on one dive. Mako sharks seem to be more difficult to find, but when they are around they are very bold and inquisitive. Typical size seen is about 2 meters, but larger ones are around. Both species have the ability of great bursts of speed and divers are kept on their toes on this dive. Makos have even been recorded leaping up to 5 meters out of the water.

Great White Shark trips at seal island - False Bay
Shark Explorers have just been given a permit to run Great White Shark trips in False Bay. Morne has years of experience under his belt with the White Sharks in Gansbaai and also is famous for being the cameraman outside the cage for many of the major Great White Shark documentaries.
General information
False Bay is on the doorstep of the great city of Cape Town. A mere 30min drive from Cape Town international airport and a white shark hotspot. White Sharks naturally hunt Cape fur seals in winter months around seal colonies on the Western Cape coast. Seal Island houses over 70000 cape fur seals and due to a number of factors it is the best place in the world to see natural predatory interactions between these powerful sharks and their natural prey. The best time of day to see this is the first two hours after the break of day.
Up to 40 natural predations can take place in one morning! White sharks are probably the most charismatic and popular of the sharks. However, much of what is seen on TV or read is mostly not based on reality. These sharks are awesome! Nothing compares to seeing a white shark for the first time and all preconceived ideas are crushed with the first viewing. Whether it’s a surprise reveal from below or whether you sight the dorsal fin coming up the chum slick. You don’t even have to climb in the cage to get a good view as many of the sharks swim at the surface and some even pop their heads out to have a look at you. White sharks have a presence which is difficult to describe and this is the reason why you have to experience them for yourself.
