Trip Summary with the 7 Gill Cow Sharks

This dive is a very special one in a awe inspiring setting under the cape peninsular mountain range set in small secluded stony cove. This is one of the only places in the world that you can consistently dive with these rarely seen sharks. Sevengill cowsharks are formidable predators of seals, other sharks and fish. They are called “wolves of the sea” because of their cooperative hunting behaviour which is very unique behaviour amongst sharks. What adds to the unique experience is that because of their natural curiosity and confidence no form of chum or bait is required to interact with them. You will be amazed how confident these sharks are with humans and divers which they are not used to. Cow Sharks are excellent to photograph and a joy to dive with. You will find yourself surrounded by these beautiful placid sharks and at only maximum 10 metres deep! This is an excellent dive and a must for all who want to see unusual sharks in a stunning environment. To me there is no better way to start the day in Cape Town and definitely one of my favourite dives!!

Seal Diving - 2nd Dive option

You have the option on your second dive to either dive with the 7 Gill Cow Sharks or go up the coast nearby to do the second dive with a resident seal colony. This is great fun and a nice contrast with the Cow shark dive. The dive is nice and long due to it being shallow and it is amazing how the seals interact with divers. 

Habitat

The sharks and seals are found in between the kelp forests of the Cape in a Marine Protected Area (MPA). This means the ecosystem is healthy and has an abundance and diversity of a variety of fish, shellfish and soft corals. There is no current only a surge at times but and the dive is easy and very sheltered from the open ocean.

Meet at the dock

Launch & 15 minute scenic boat ride along the stunning Cape Peninsular coastline

Anchor and kit up

8:00

Slip into the water amongst the kelp and down to 10m and enjoy breathtaking dive

Surface and enjoy 1 hour surface interval with coffee and snacks whilst talking about the experience - If diving with the cow sharks we will stay on site and rest before the second dive. If the combo of Cow Shark diving and Seal diving is chosen you will go to the second dive spot during the interval

Drop back in for some more sharks or Seals

Surface and return to Simons Town Harbour

Optional visit at the Save Our Seas educational centre
