Summary of the trip
All cruises depart from Kleinbaai harbour near Gansbaai where the Great White Shark Boats launch. These Whale watching trips are run from July to December and this is quite possibly the only place in the world where one can see a mighty whale and a great white shark on the same boat trip. This all round trip is fantastic as you will have the opportunity of seeing Southern Right Whales, Hump Back Whales, Bryde's Whales, Dolphins, Great White Sharks, Penguins and a huge colony of 60,000 seals on Geyser rock which is just accross Shark Alley from Dyer Island.
For people who do not want to do a full Great White Shark Cage Diving and viewing trip especially if you have kids then this is an excellent trip to consider. On 80% of all trips we see Great White Sharks for at least 5-10 minutes circling the boat. Seeing Great White Sharks, Whales, Dolphins, Penguins, a variety of bird life and Seals by Dyer Island all on just 1 trip this could be the ultimate all round boat trip for nature lovers.
Dyer Island is located 4 miles from shore and is completely protected for the conservation of its many resident bird species, including the African penguin. Adjacent to Dyer Island is Geyser Rock, home to a 60,000 strong Cape fur seal colony. These seals are also present all year round. The boat will visit the channel of water between Dyer Island and Geyser Rock which is the world renowned Shark Alley. Known as the Mcdonalds drive through for Great White Sharks this is a very special and wild place.
The trips are focussed on being both fun and educational. Each trip is led by experienced marine guides who will share their knowledge with you, keeping emphasis on the welfare and conservation of the animal and environment. Responsible tourism is the main objective and focus on conservation, education, community upliftment and safety.
The trip
On this trip the permit allows the boat to visit Dyer Island and covering the area between Danger point to Quin Point which is close to Cape Agulhas the most southern tip of Africa. Most of our whales are found at Pearly Beach which is a shallow bay banked by a Stunning white stretch of sand. While the boat is not permitted to move closer than 50m from the Whales inquisitive whales frequently swim to the boat for a close encounter, which is allowed. the Whales are never chased or harassed in any way. After spending time with the whales, the boat will make it's way to Dyer Island. During this stretch it is known to occasionally bump into the odd Humpback whale lying in the deeper water. Giant petrels and Cape gannets can also be spotted as well as Albatros. When at Dyer Island the boat can approach close enough to view African penguins, Cape cormorants and many other bird species. The boat will travel through Shark Alley and pass along Geyser Rock, home to over 60,000 Cape Fur Seals. The colony is thriving and there is always lots of activity, especially around November time when the seal pups are born.
After the seals the boat will cruise by and rest close to the White Shark Cage Diving boats where you may have a chance of seeing a Great White Shark on the surface.
The Whale watching trips are about 2½ hours long. They run from July – December. All trips are weather dependent
