South Africa Shark Species
Sharks have lived on this earth for over 400 million years, so they were here before dinosaurs! sadly though, in the last 30 years, humans have driven this creature, with it’s 400 million years of evolutionary success, to the brink of extinction. Here we hope to provide some useful information, that we hope, will encourage our visitors to see these amazing animals in a different light, not as ferocious man-eaters, but as the highly evolved and efficient predators that they really are.
Of the various species of shark found off South Africa the majority are harmless and are rarely encountered. Only a few species have been implicated in attacks on humans, with only one recorded shark attack in South Africa on a scuba diver – and that was on the surface.
