The Boat
Slashfin is a custom designed aluminium boat specifically made for the shark cage diving. The name Slashfin is dedicated to a male Great White shark now over 4m long with a very distinctive slashed dorsal fin. The dorsal fin was shredded in pieces from a young age which was caused either by a boat propeller or a bite from another shark. The dorsal fin is now healed but is very distinctive with 2 slashes through it.The boat holds up to 45 passengers but has lots of space to move around inside and outside. The boat is run with 4 x outboard 300hp engines and it fast and smooth too and from the Island. The boat is very wide and stable on the water and due to this minimises the risk of seasickness.
The Cage
The cage is a new 7 man galvanised steel cage. The cage sits low down from the boat and is easy to get in and out onto the boat. There is a float running along the top of the cage which causes partial obscurity but clients can see through the small gap across the water surface. Just below the surface is a gap to look through to view the sharks.
White Shark Diving Trip
You will meet at the shark diving crew house The Great White House in Kleinbaai which has bathroom facilities with showers and a restaurant. Breakfast is offered along with the briefing about the trip. Clients are fitted with comfortable inflatable life-jackets before the walk down to the harbour.
The trip to the shark diving location takes 15-20 minutes. In the Winter (April – October) at Dyer Island and in the summer months (November – March) at Joubertsdam reef by Franskraal beach. Once on location, a scent trial is made. Once the sharks arrive at the boat then you will kit up in your wetsuits and cage diving will commence.
After about 3 to 4 hours depending on the day the boat will head back to land.
There are drinks and snacks provided on the boat. Following the diving and viewing you will have tea / coffee and scones at the lodge whilst watching the video of the day. (Optional Extra)

Marine Dynamics
Marine Dynamics is a sister company to Dyer Island Cruises, a boat based Whale watching company and also the Dyer Island conservation trust. The conservation trust looks after the interest of birdlife and marine life around Dyer Island which is now sponsored by VW.
The shark diving side of the company was founded by white shark pioneer Andre Hartman who was one of the first people to ever free dive with white sharks and appeared in numerous international documentaries. Wilfred Chivell, the pioneer in marine conservation in the Gansbaai region now runs the company.
Marine Dynamics not only offer educational trips for tourists but run a successful volunteer program for students who are passionate about sharks and tourism. The researchers for the company and volunteers collect data on the White Sharks and their environment on a daily basis during the day trips as well as on their other research boat. All data recorded is forwarded to the Department of Marine and Coastal Management. Statistics are recorded regarding the sex, size and markings on white sharks.
