7 Gill Cow Shark Diving – Cape Town Trip
The Seven Gill Cow Shark dive is a very special one in a stunning setting under the cape peninsular mountain range set in small protected stony cove. This is the only place in the world where you can consistently dive with these rarely seen sharks. Seven Gill Cow Sharks look prehistoric and slow and docile but they are formidable predators of seals, other sharks and fish. They are branded as “wolves of the sea” because of their cooperative hunting behaviour which is a rarity among sharks. The sharks are concentrated in very small areas and if you miss the spot then you will not see one. If you know where to go then you will be among 30+ on a dive and have the dive of your life. You will be amazed how confident these sharks are with divers and approach within inches without a care. Cow Sharks are excellent to photograph as they are so comfortable in their domain with divers. You will find yourself surrounded by these beautiful placid sharks and the best of all it is a simple dive at only 10 meters deep in the protective kelp forest! This is an excellent dive and a must for all who want to see unusual sharks in a stunning environment. To me there is no better way to start the day in Cape Town and definitely one of my favorite dives!!
Seal Diving – 2nd Dive option
You have the option on your second dive to either dive with the 7 Gill Cow Sharks or go up the coast nearby to do the second dive with a resident seal colony. This is great fun and a nice contrast with the Cow shark dive. The dive is nice and long due to it being shallow and it is amazing how the seals interact with divers.
The trips depart from Simon’s Town any time of day and we will inform you of the times the day before the dive.
The sharks and seals are found in between the kelp forests of the Cape peninsular in False bay in a Marine Protected Area. Here the ecosystem is healthy as it is a protected area and there is an abundance and diversity of a variety of fish, shellfish and soft corals. The dive site is very sheltered but can be surgy when there are swells but mostly this is in the summer months.

This was a special dive in beautiful Kelp Forests and many sharks! The Cow sharks are amazingly relaxed and easy to dive with and not scary at all. The water was a little cold but the dive itself was so good that I would do it again no matter how cold it was!
This was one of the best dives I have ever done! It is easy, Shallow and the sharks come extremely close which makes it an exhilarating dive. Morne is fantastic and this is a must do dive!
