Best of Cape Town

Shark Cage Diving in summer is new to Cape Town and False Bay. It has been found that male Great White Sharks visit seal Island in False Bay from February. This was tested extensively, and so far, the trips have been run with 100% success rate. The average number of sharks per trip varies and water visibility is good from between 3-5 meters daily.

If time permits, the summer is possibly the best to cage diving in Gansbaai, and breaching trips in False Bay in the winter. But, if you want to do the trip close to Cape Town and do not have all day, then this is a great choice of trip!

Bookings are essential as space is limited.

Please note: Great white sharks are completely wild animals and as such sightings cannot be guaranteed. The crew will use their best knowledge in order to give you the most realistic expectations before making a booking. Should you not see a Great White Shark on a trip then you will not be refunded.

Trip Information

The sharks do not, unfortunately, hunt and breach on a regular basis at Seal Island in the summer but they are there around the Island. Already this summer there have been a couple of predations on seals witnessed on the trips which was a huge bonus. False Bay has an excellent advantage on Gansbaai if the weather is bad at Gansbaai.

Fortunately, False Bay is sheltered by westerly winds which tend to hit Gansbaai occasionally so it is possible now in the summer to still see the Great White sharks if the weather is bad and Gansbaai trips have been cancelled. The predominant wind in summer is South East which does affect False Bay and Seal Island and not Gansbaai but normally this only starts picking up from the afternoon. In the winter we do get frequent cold fronts rolling in an unlike Gansbaai the Island in False Bay is fairly sheltered and trips are possible.

Itinerary
SIMONS TOWN – AM Trip (February – April)

The sharks only start breaching from May normally so we concentrate on just cage diving at the Island. We do not have to launch at first light unlike in the winter so the start is not too early.

7:00
Meet crew at Simon’s Town Pier. Guests are welcomed aboard and a full safety and weather briefing is given before departure

7:15
Depart for Seal Island. (25 to 35-minute boat ride)

7:30 – 10:30
The crew will anchor up and then start to chum the water to attract sharks to the vessel. The shark could arrive immediately or it could take a while. Normally we do not have to wait too long however but these are wild animals and they will only approach us if they want to. If the weather conditions are favourable, i.e. good visibility and workable seas and sharks then you may have the opportunity to use scuba in the cage. Once the sharks arrive you will slip into the cage and then enjoy the sharks.

11:00
The boat will return to Simon’s Town Harbour depending on the weather conditions and shark activity but this is not set in stone.

SIMONS TOWN – PM Trip (May – September)

Join a trip in the afternoon to Seal Island to Cage Dive with the Great White Sharks. The Cage Diving afternoon trips just focus on cage diving at the island. This trip is not a breaching and predation trip like the morning and it is unlikely to see predation activity in the afternoons. At the end of the trip, a decoy (fake seal) will be towed and you will hopefully be lucky with a view of natural predation close to the boat. The boat takes a maximum of 12 guests per trip. This small number allows for great viewing opportunities and long cage dives. The cage is tied to the boat and guests are allowed to snorkel in the cage. In view of this, diving certification is not necessary.

13:00
Meet crew at Simon’s Town Pier. Guests are welcomed aboard and a full safety and weather briefing is given before departure.

13:15
Depart for Seal Island. (25 to 35-minute boat ride).

13:30 – 16:30
The crew find a suitable location around Seal Island to anchor and start attracting sharks. Once a shark approaches the boat bait is put in the water to keep the sharks around the boat. At no point are the sharks purposefully fed or handled and only fish products and no Shark livers or any other attractants that have a negative impact on the environment are used. Once the sharks arrive the divers will enter the cage. The sharks come right up to the boat and if you do not want to dive then you will still have an excellent experience viewing the sharks. Snacks, soft drinks, fruit juice, bottled water are available on the boat.

17:00
Depending on the weather and shark activity the boat should arrive back in Simon’s Town Harbour.
