2 Options for Whale Watching (June – November)
Dyer Island Eco Whale Watching
The Dyer Island Cruise departs from Kleinbaai Harbour where all eight Shark Cage Diving boats are also based. The whale watching ocean safaris run from July to December and it is one of the only places in the world where you can see the mighty Whale and a Great White Shark on the same boat trip. You have the opportunity to see the Southern Right Whale, Hump Back Whales. Bryde’s Whales, Dolphins, Great White Sharks, Penguins and a Seal colony with approximately 60, 000 Cape Fur Seals. This trip is an excellent all-round one covering the Marine Big 5
Walker Bay Whale Sanctuary Whale Tours
Launch from Gansbaai Harbour then along the De Kelders coastline into the middle of Walker Bay where there are up to 200 Whales playing. The Whales start to arrive in May and then leave early to late December yearly and come here to mate, give birth to their young and nurture the calves before heading back to Antarctic to feed. This bay is stunning with a break-taking beach as a backdrop to the many Whales, resting, breaching, lob-tailing, spy-hopping and sun-bathing. On most trips the Whales are curious with the boat and even though the boat can only approach the Whales within 50 meters most of the time they approach the boat and passengers get a very close-up intimate look at these beautiful Whales.
Dyer Island Big 5 Marine Eco Tour (December – June)
The Dyer Island Eco Cruise departs from Kleinbaai Harbour where all eight Shark Cage Diving boats are also based. The ocean safaris run from December to June when we run to Dyer Island to see the 70,000 strong Cape Fur Seal colony, Penguin colony bird life, Dolphins and Sharks. After going to the Island the boat will stop at the shark boats and you will hopefully see a Great White Shark and many Bronze Whaler Sharks.

Please note: Whales are completely wild animals and as such sightings cannot be guaranteed. The crew will use their best knowledge in order to give you the most realistic expectations before making a booking. Whales start arriving from May but the bulk of the Whales arrive from mid to end of June normally. The Southern Right Whales start leaving normally beginning of December but can stay until end of December some seasons.

The trip out on the rib was a fantastic experience. We got to see several Great White Sharks at the cage diving boat and then a few penguins and literally thousands of seals at Dyer Island itself. Afterwards we went to see the Southern Right Whales and we were lucky enough to encounter several mating groups of 4 or 5 whales some of them with calves up close. The staff upon the boat were all very passionate about the sea life, at one point we looped around (pardon the pun!) to pick up some loose rope to ensure the whales didn’t get tangled in it, and they provided great knowledge around the marine life in the area. Also the boat itself was excellent, having a third deck gave great views down into the water which was particularly useful when viewing the Great Whites.
