Seasons

Great White Shark Cage Diving

Winter – April – September

In winter it usually doesn’t take long for the first sharks to arrive, however this is nature and the shark is the boss and not the diver or tour operator. Patience is vital, as with all things in nature, but when waiting just remember that you are in the white shark diving capital of the world! The chances of seeing a great white shark are higher here than anywhere else. During these months the operators work around Dyer Island in Shark Alley as the sharks are there hunting for Cape Fur Seals. The weather is unpredictable during these months so please allow for a few days spare following your booked trip in the event that your trip is cancelled due to high seas.

Summer – October – March

In the summer months the water is surprisingly, much colder than the winter. Due to Gansbaai’s geographical location being on the Atlantic Ocean but close to the Indian Ocean, there are huge differences in water temperature depending on currents and weather systems. The Sharks are by the beach during these months just behind the breakers and not by Dyer Island. Sightings are still good but the water visibility is not great (1-5 meters) The Shark activity is generally slower and it is more difficult to attract the sharks to the boats. It is advisable to allow for a few days to increase your chances of seeing a Great White Shark during the low season. On record February & March are the worst times to come as the Shark activity is normally very slow. Having said that we only have approximately 4-8 days between these months when we do not see a shark on average so your chances are still good during this time.

White Shark Breaching – Gansbaai

Winter – June – September

The Great White Sharks normally start to hunt seals from around Mid – June when the sharks are generally based around Dyer Island and Shark Alley. The trips are weather dependent as we need to tow the seal decoy around the outside of the Island. We do however have many days that we can do this. Please note that this is not the prime place to see the White Sharks breaching and hunting and if you want to see this specifically then you should look at our Cape Town White Shark Trips Gansbaai is the best place to see the Great White sharks up close and personal for cage diving and viewing and the Breaching trip is an excellent combination trip available in the winter months. With a minimum of 12 people per trip there is lots of space on the boat to view the White Sharks Breaching from the back of the boat and also to enjoy the sharks in the cage after.

Whale Watching – Gansbaai

Season – July – December

The Southern Right Whales normally start coming into the area from late June and this is one of the best places in the world to view the Whales from a boat and definitely the best place in the world to watch the Whales from the land. This is a must do activity in season and if you are cage diving then I would consider to book a Big 2 Combo package which combines the Sharks and Whales.
